Most families survive on less than one dollar per day. This has resulted in many children
missing or skipping school due to hunger or engaging in child labor as the only means
available to them to help their families earn a livelihood. A school feeding program is the
first step toward ensuring that affected children stay in school. The Roskern Foundation
hopes to enroll 600 children in this program. In addition, the Roskern Foundation will
continue its existing church feeding program which serves 300 youth as well as 100
elderly citizens in the slum.
Children support activities to improve the lives of poor children through sponsorships
will be established to assist 300 children. Support to the local community in this regard
will be through the distribution of stipends ($50 each month) to the families of the
selected neediest children.
As a result of the AIDS virus, there is a very large number of orphans living in the slum.
Many of them become homeless when their caregivers die. To address this problem
13
and to give these homeless/orphaned children hope in life, the Roskern Foundation will
establish a foster care
14
program for homeless/orphaned children, a kinship program for homeless/orphaned
children and a transitional home for homeless/orphaned children. The Roskern
Foundation will also collaborate with other foster care programs run by churches in
Nairobi. The number of children that will be targeted for these programs is 190.
In order to achieve the objectives of the project, it is desirable that the Foundation be
able to acquire land near the slum. The cost of land near the slum is lower compared
to other parts of the city. Land will not be acquired in the slum because we need to
have access to running water, electricity and better security. The Roskern Foundation
plans to acquire 1 acre of property and eventually construct a multi-story Mission and
Community Center, a soccer field and basketball and volleyball courts.
The Foundation plans to initially lease and then construct a Mission and Community
Center for the youth and the poor families living in and around Kiambiu. This will
enable the Roskern Foundation to expand and improve on the educational programs
already existing in the slum. The Center will constitute a meeting point for the youth
and will be a center of new activities and opportunities.
The Center will be comprised of a multipurpose hall, classrooms, a library, two offices
and restrooms. The Center will accommodate the literacy school for adults, a course of
ICT (Information Communication Technologies), recreational activities, a cinema and
the didactic movies projection which will target 1,500 people. The Mission and
Community Center will be used to improve the management of the local Non-
Governmental Organizations’ (NGO’s) partners and thus increase their levels of
sustainability. The main activities of the Center are a literacy school for the children and
professional training for the youth and women. However, the Center will also host
activities for the entire community such as: a shop for selling handcrafts, training for
local partner organization staff members, awareness meetings and free movies. The
specific planned activities are:
In order to be engaged in trading activities in the Center (business and recreation), the
youth need start-up capital. To this end, revolving funds should be given to those who
are interested that will be collected back. The beneficiaries are those who are going to
trade in the shops, work in the cafeteria, run the sports center, manage the information
center or run the cinema. The repaid money will be given again to others who didn’t
receive the credit.
The Roskern Foundation’s Board through the Project Manager will oversee the hiring of
competent personnel, preferably from among the Christian faithful of Kiambiu Baptist
Church who have the passion to help the disadvantaged in society and share the Roskern
Foundation’s vision..
To improve the social and economic status of the slum residents by providing
access to a health facility, literacy school, library and study center, sporting
activities, water and sanitation initiatives, etc.
