The Roskern Community Centre is not meant to supply every necessity of each family but rather to empower families to meet their own needs by giving them the tools required to become self-sufficient.
The Roskern Foundation will establish a transitional home to accommodate children who are homeless or orphaned due to the death of their caregivers primarily from the AIDS virus. Children will live in this transitional home until a foster home can be found for them.
The Roskern Community Centre will offer the residents of the slums relevant and practical entrepreneurial and vocational skills training, provide a literacy school and library to improve the literacy rate in the slums and include a health facility, sports centre and a multipurpose hall. It will serve as a meeting place for the slum residents and will offer new activities and opportunities. The Community Centre will be constructed near the slums in an area where there is access to running water, electricity and increased security. The Community Centre will be a multi-story building with rental apartments occupying the upper floors. The apartments will generate income to help make the Community Centre self-sustainable.
The Roskern Community Centre will train and equip the residents of the slum with entrepreneurial and vocational skills such as welding, carpentry, sewing, hairdressing and photography/videography so that they can eventually establish and maintain profitable ventures.
The library will serve as a resource where the youth will have access to resources and information that enables them to be connected to wider society and to the world. The literacy school will aim to improve the literacy levels of the most disadvantaged children in the slums.
The health facility will provide basic medical services at lower costs to slum residents. Current access to health facilities is extremely limited, resulting in residents relying on a few locally available private clinics that operate illegally and have prohibitive prices.
The sports centre will include showers, dressing rooms, restrooms, a meeting room, a soccer field, volleyball and basketball courts. The goal is to offer leisure activities and a meeting place for the youth of the slums while also providing the most skilled among them an opportunity to qualify for a national sports team.
A multipurpose hall will be organized into a resource and recreational center and will be utilized for workshops, seminars and training purposes. The hall will also be used for social meetings such as youth and women’s round table discussions as well as for weddings and special events.
